Gynecomastia, Enlarged Breasts in Men

Gynecomastia is a condition of enlarged breasts in men. They may result merely from an increase in volume (pseudo gynecomastia) due to excess weight, or from excess breast tissue (real gynecomastia). The incidence of both forms of gynecomastia has increased significantly for the past few years due to a general increase in obesity and a number of external factors. According to one hypothesis real gynecomastia is triggered by drugs. The symptoms will usually disappear as soon as the drugs are discontinued. Hormones in drinking water and meat, as well as plasticizers in plastic bottles, are also suspected as potential causes. Occasionally, genuine hormonal disorders may be the reason for the enlarged breast, requiring treatment. In extremely rare cases, breast cancer can also occur in men. The tumor usually manifests itself by a one-sided swelling of the mammary gland.

Gynecomastia changes the silhouette of the male chest. For many affected men, this “female silhouette“ may be very stressful. Their self-perception will suffer, and disparaging remarks in their private and professional environment can further undermine their self-esteem. In a predominantly male setting, this may lead to bullying and discrimination, possibly even to occupational disadvantages.

Surgical correction may be advisable here, even though gynecomastia is harmless from a medical perspective, with the possible exception of male breast cancer. There are different surgical techniques and incisions, as well as different scar shapes to achieve the individually desired optimal result, depending on the initial findings. In most cases, these will heal quickly and inconspicuously. After a few months, they will hardly be visible. In gynecomastia surgery, it is particularly apparent that wound healing and regeneration will take several weeks to months. The chest area’s sensitivity may also change in the first few months, as with any operation. I will discuss these topics with you in detail and with great empathy in a personal consultation.

Detailed consultations are mandatory before surgical procedures. It is essential to talk about the motivation for this kind of surgery, to discuss whether the desired result can be achieved, and to speak about possible limitations. Other important topics are alternative treatments, as well as potential adverse side effects and possible risks.

Risks

As with any surgical procedure, gynecomastia surgery may lead to bruising (hematoma), secondary bleeding, swelling, wound healing disorders, infections, and wound dehiscence. Temporary numbness of the treated area may also occur.

If you decide on a surgical procedure, it is essential that you are cared for professionally and personally during the entire process.

I attach great importance to perceiving, advising, and treating you as an individual, with all your personality’s facets. My many years of experience, expertise, empathy, and communication are central pillars of my therapeutic success. Intensive and personal post-treatment care is as much a focus of my work as the preparation and the treatment itself. After all, a perfect result can only be achieved by working together as a team.

It goes without saying that your health is always given priority. Surgery that negatively affects your health or physical integrity is not recommended and should not be performed in the first place.
