Lower Eyelid Surgery
Our eyes are our window to the world; they let us look at ourselves and everything surrounding us.
The skin around the eyes is much thinner than anywhere else. It is more exposed to the aging process than other parts of our face and body. Distinctive facial expressions, cheerful laughter, too much sunbathing, unhealthy lifestyle habits (smoking, excessive sugar, and salt consumption), as well as sorrow and worries leave their traces around our eyes.
Bags may appear in the area under our eyes, which can be removed by lower eyelid surgery. These bags are caused by an excess of loosening skin around the lower eyelid or a protrusion of eye socket tissue.
The objective of a lower eyelid lift is always to rejuvenate the eye area. Bags often cause the face to look tired and worn. In this case, a lower eyelid lift will undoubtedly improve your self-esteem and quality of life.
Dr. med. Dr. med. Christina Irene Günter will perform lower eyelid surgery under general anesthesia. Although the procedure may be accomplished on an out-patient basis, a hospital stay of one night improves and accelerates the healing process, leading to fewer complications and a better overall result.
The surgery begins with a small incision under the lower eyelid lash line, which extends about 1 to 1.5 cm beyond the outer corner of the eye. In the process, the skin around the lower eyelid is loosened and tightened gently; excess skin is eliminated. If necessary, excess fatty tissue is removed before the suture is closed. Tightening the lower lid ligament may also be included, if required. This procedure aims to create a harmonious transition from the eyelid to the surrounding facial area, for a beautiful and youthful appearance.
In jedem Fall ist das Ziel der Unterlidstraffung ein harmonischer Übergang vom Augenlid zum umgebenden Gesicht, damit wieder eine schöne und jugendliche Erscheinung möglich wird.
After the surgery, constant cooling of the eye area has proved beneficial: the contraction of blood vessels reduces the risk of secondary bleeding and swelling. In the first few hours after the operation, a well-fitting eye bandage is also advantageous as it reduces swelling and bruising, thus improving the entire healing process. It is also essential to avoid rubbing your eyes after a lower eyelid lift.
Minor hematoma and swelling are normal and will disappear after a few days or weeks. The sutures will be removed after five to seven days. You should avoid physical exercise for up to six weeks.
With progressive age-related tissue sagging, lower eyelid surgery can be repeated; however, experience shows that this is necessary only after several years.
Lower eyelid surgery may lead to bruising (hematoma), secondary bleeding, swelling, scars, wound dehiscence, and in very rare cases, also to infections. In addition, temporary dryness and a foreign body sensation, combined with redness or swelling of the conjunctiva, are possible. Other risks of a lower eyelid correction include watery eyes, numbness in the surgical era, slight asymmetries, or malposition of the eyelids (ectropion). During the first few days after the surgery, slight sensitivity to light may occur.
If you decide on lower eyelid surgery, it is essential that you are cared for professionally and personally during the entire process.
I attach great importance to perceiving, advising, and treating you as an individual, with all your personality’s facets. My many years of experience, expertise, empathy, and communication are central pillars of my therapeutic success. Intensive and personal post-treatment care is as much a focus of my work as the preparation and the treatment itself. After all, a perfect result can only be achieved by working together as a team.
It goes without saying that your health is always given priority. Surgery that negatively affects your health or physical integrity is not recommended and should not be performed in the first place.
