There is hardly any other aesthetic operation with as many different names to describe it. Even for the specialist, it is not always easy to keep track, primarily since the melodious terms do not always hide a \u201cnovel\u201d surgical technique. Here, too, old wine is sometimes sold in new skins.<\/p>

With increasing age, our face and skin are susceptible to natural changes. These include volumetric losses in the deeper tissue layers, fatty and conjunctive tissue, and bone degradation. In addition, the facial conjunctive tissue slackens: the loosened tissue layers and excessive skin are pulled downwards by gravity, changing the facial contours.\nThese natural processes are different for every individual. Accordingly, it is also necessary to decide individually which treatment is best suited to a patient. During an in-depth consultation, Dr. med. Dr. med. Christina Irene G\u00fcnter will evaluate and determine, together with you, which method is best suited to your unique situation. Since the intended changes are quite complex, it often requires more than one procedure to be effective. In one instance, a single SMAS Lift may be sufficient, while in another, a combination of a mini facelift with an upper eyelid lift and autologous fat transfer may lead to the best result.<\/p>

Depending on the procedure\u2019s complexity, surgery may take between two to five hours and will be performed under general anesthesia or twilight anesthesia with local anesthesia. \u00a0<\/p>

The incision for a facelift will run along the hairline, continuing around the ear.<\/p>

The tissue will then be lifted in two stages: the first step is to loosen the skin layer. Then the layer below, consisting of musculature, conjunctive tissue, and fat (the so-called SMAS or superficial muscular aponeurotic system), will also be slackened. The individual layers can now be tightened in different directions. This procedure leads to the best results.<\/p>

Once the lower SMAS layer has been tightened, the overlying skin layer is smoothed, and excess skin is removed. The edges are then sutured without tension. The incisions will heal completely, leaving only inconspicuous, linear scars that may easily be concealed by your hair.<\/p>

To minimize swelling and bruising, the surgery will be followed by an inpatient hospital stay of one or two nights. The sutures will be removed one to two weeks after the procedure. After approx. two weeks, you will be able to resume social activities.<\/p>

Before such a treatment, detailed consultations are mandatory. It is essential to talk about the motivation for this kind of surgery, to discuss whether the desired result can be achieved, and to speak about possible limitations. Other important topics are alternative treatments, as well as potential adverse side effects and possible risks.\u00a0<\/p>

Risks<\/h2>

As with any surgical procedure, a facelift may lead to bruising (hematoma), secondary bleeding, swelling, wound healing disorders, infections, and wound dehiscence. Temporary sometimes long lasting numbness of the treated area or palsy of the mimic musculature may also occur.<\/p>
