Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is necessary if a breast had to be removed entirely or partially for critical medical reasons or has been lost due to an accident.

There are various surgical options for the reconstruction of a breast, and also the time of the surgery may be chosen freely. In many situations, it is possible to perform a reconstruction at the same time the breast is removed. Sometimes, a temporary method has to be found first, followed by a permanent solution after a certain period of time. At other times, however, it is only possible to perform a separate procedure at a later date. This depends quite essentially on the reason why the breast had to be removed, and whether further medical measures (e.g., radiation) are necessary. All these options have to be discussed with all the doctors involved.

In addition, it also needs to be decided which surgical method is to be employed in reconstructing the breast. Generally, there are several possible options, using implants, autologous tissue, or, as a third alternative, a combination of both. If the patient decides on reconstruction with autologous tissue, she again has various options, including either the latissimus dorsi muscle or the DIEP as the donor tissue, or autologous fat transplantation.

Depending on the complexity of the situation, surgical correction may be more or less intricate. The surgical technique is dependent on the local, anatomical status, the patient’s prognosis and general condition, and the desired result. Possible risks, undesirable side effects, and complications, the duration of convalescence, and the follow-up treatment design will depend on the procedure‘s complexity.

In a personal, in-depth consultation, I will discuss your diagnoses with you in detail, as well as all treatment options and alternatives. This way, we can decide together how to move forward.

Detailed consultations are mandatory before surgical procedures. It is essential to talk about the motivation for this kind of surgery, to discuss whether the desired result can be achieved, and to speak about possible limitations. Other important topics are alternative treatments, as well as potential adverse side effects and possible risks.

Risks

If you decide on a breast reconstruction surgery, it is essential that you are cared for professionally and personally during the entire process.

If you decide on surgical breast augmentation, it is essential that you are cared for professionally and personally during the entire process.

I attach great importance to perceiving, advising, and treating you as an individual, with all your personality’s facets. My many years of experience, expertise, empathy, and communication are central pillars of my therapeutic success. Intensive and personal post-treatment care is as much a focus of my work as the preparation and the treatment itself. After all, a perfect result can only be achieved by working together as a team.

It goes without saying that your health is always given priority. Surgery that negatively affects your health or physical integrity is not recommended and should not be performed in the first place.
