Side effects of Botox treatments

In experienced hands, the treatment is safe and reliable. However, as with any medical procedure, side effects may occur.

The more common, mostly harmless side effects include slight redness, swelling, or small bruises at the injection site. These usually subside on their own within a few days. Some patients also report a slight feeling of tension in the treated area during the first few days.

Rarer side effects mainly affect facial expressions or the function of certain muscle groups. These include:

Asymmetries in the face (e.g., differently raised eyebrows)
Drooping eyelid (ptosis)
Restrictions on certain movements (e.g., frowning, smiling)
Headaches or a general feeling of pressure

Such effects are often caused by excessive or uneven dosing, an unfavorable injection site, or an individual, unpredictable reaction to the preparation.

In very rare cases, Botox can also diffuse into neighboring regions and temporarily weaken muscles there. In extremely rare cases—especially when used improperly—more severe functional disorders can occur.

It is important to note that: Most side effects after Botox treatment are temporary and can be significantly alleviated with appropriate measures. An early medical examination helps to identify the cause and initiate the appropriate therapy. The sooner a patient reacts after the onset of abnormalities, the better the chances of harmonizing the result and quickly restoring well-being.

Treatment of Botox side effects

Botox (botulinum toxin) cannot be directly “dissolved” or neutralized, depending on the cause of the side effect. The effect of the preparation wears off naturally in the body, as it works by blocking nerve impulses to certain muscles and this blockage is reversible after a few weeks to months.

In the case of minor side effects such as slight asymmetries or uneven muscle movements, an experienced doctor can administer targeted compensatory injections into neighboring muscle areas. This often allows facial balance to be restored more quickly.

Further supporting measures may include:

Physiotherapy techniques or targeted muscle exercises to promote or reduce the activity of certain muscles
Massage or careful manual mobilization in the treated area (only as directed by a physician)
Medication to relieve tension or mild pain (e.g., anti-inflammatory drugs, if necessary)

In some cases of ptosis (drooping eyelid), special eye drops containing sympathomimetics are used to temporarily stimulate the eyelid lifting muscle, thereby slightly raising the eyelid. However, this measure only provides temporary improvement until the effect of the Botox wears off.

Side effects of hyaluronic acid treatments

Hyaluronic acid fillers are widely used in aesthetic medicine to compensate for volume loss, optimize facial contours, or smooth wrinkles. The preparations consist of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a substance that also occurs naturally in the body. When used correctly, hyaluronic acid injections are considered to be well tolerated. Nevertheless, side effects can occur—both immediately after treatment and with a delay.

Common and mostly temporary side effects include:

Redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site Hematomas (bruises)
Hämatome (blaue Flecken)
Slight feeling of tension or foreign body sensation
These reactions usually subside on their own within a few days to a week.

Possible later or more severe side effects include:

Nodule formation or palpable hardening
Irregular contours or visible filler accumulations
Overcorrections with unnatural volume increase
Skin discoloration due to superficial injections

Rare but serious complications include:

Vascular compression or vascular occlusion – can lead to reduced blood flow and tissue damage
Inflammatory reactions or infections in the treatment area
Late reactions such as granulomas or fibrotic changes

The causes of such side effects can be related to the injection technique, the placement of the material, the dosage, or individual anatomical characteristics. The quality of the product used also plays a role.

It is important to note that:
If you experience signs of circulatory problems, sudden pain, paleness, or marbling of the skin, seek medical attention immediately. Early intervention increases the chances of preventing further damage and preserving the aesthetic result.

Dissolving hyaluronic acid with Hylase (hyaluronidase)

If significant irregularities, nodules, overcorrections, or—rarely, but seriously—signs of circulatory disorders occur after hyaluronic acid treatment, hyaluronidase can be used.

When is dissolution advisable?

Visible/hardened filler accumulations or asymmetries
Overcorrections with unnatural volume
Superficial deposits with contour irregularities
Acute vascular problems (vascular compromise): prompt treatment is crucial here to prevent tissue damage.

Effect & procedure
After careful examination, hyaluronidase is injected specifically where excess or misplaced hyaluronic acid is present. The first effects are often visible within minutes to hours; depending on the findings, repeated sessions may be necessary. The aim is to dissolve the hyaluronic acid in a controlled manner: as much as necessary, as little as possible. Important: Only hyaluronic acid fillers respond to hyaluronidase. Other fillers (e.g., calcium hydroxylapatite) cannot be dissolved with it.

Safety & possible risks
Like any injection, treatment with hyaluronidase can cause temporary redness, swelling, or bruising. Allergic reactions to the enzyme are rare but possible; if there is a relevant medical history, a test or particularly careful dosing may be considered. Theoretically, the body's own hyaluronic acid can also be temporarily affected; clinically, this effect is usually temporary and without lasting consequences. The exact placement and dosage selection are crucial in order to specifically reduce the unwanted filler material without creating an undercorrected area.

Aftercare
After dissolution, the results and blood circulation are closely monitored. In the days following treatment, the treated area should be rested; individual instructions (e.g., avoiding pressure, heat, or intense massage) are discussed in a personal consultation. If necessary, once the findings have completely stabilized, the treatment can be replanned and repeated—this time correctly.
